PR No.176 13TH ANNUAL MEETING OF REGIONAL CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE (RCC) HELD IN ISLAMABAD Islamabad

13th Annual Meeting of Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) kicked-off yesterday in Islamabad. Since its inception in 2000, this is the first time Pakistan is hosting the meeting in collaboration with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), Bangkok, Thailand. The three-day meeting has an overarching theme of “Operationalizing Global Frameworks for Risk-Resilient Development in Asia”. The theme seeks to reflect on the progress made by RCC member countries in implementing the Sendai Framework in its first year alongwith indentifying challenges and shortfalls.

While addressing the inaugural session of the meeting, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, mentioned that Pakistan being one of the most experienced country in coping with hazards had played a key role in global discussions and formulations of policies, plans and frameworks at regional and international levels for disaster risk reduction. He also observed that Asia is greatly vulnerable to the negative impacts of both geological hazards and climate change.

Earlier, while welcoming the participants, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that Sendai Frame Work provided the vision for “risk sensitive development as corner stone for sustainability”. He regarded Paris Climate Change Agreement as a hope for climatically safer world in future, especially for climatically vulnerable countries of Asian Pacific Region. Chairman NDMA also emphasized on Pakistan’s commitment towards implementation of Global Frameworks and support for all initiatives to save humanity.

Besides the Minister and Chairman NDMA, Prof. Dr. Krasae Chanawongse, Chairman Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC), Mr. Stephan Huppertz, Region Coordinator Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management, Mr. Kim DeRidder, Director, Environment Program, the Asia Foundation and Ms. Javeria Afzal, Associate Country Director, OXFAM Pakistan also addressed the inauguration session of the Meeting.

The meeting is being attended by delegates and representatives from sixteen member countries. Besides delegates from member countries, international observers from non-member states and organizations are also attending the meeting. Participation by such a large number of delegates and observers shows the confidence and trust of international community in Pakistan.
