PR No. 123 ADVISER TO THE PRIME MINISTER ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS ATTENDS THE OIC COMMITTEE ON PALESTINE Islamabad: 20 Sept. 2016

The Annual meeting of the OIC Committee on Palestine was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, in New York. DThe Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sartaj Aziz, led Pakistan delegation to the meeting, convened by Secretary General of the OIC, Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani. The OIC Contact Group was also attended by the Foreign Ministers of Palestine, Malaysia and Senegal, and representatives from Egypt, Jordan and Turkey.

The Adviser expressed grave concern over the continuing plight of the Palestinians and the violation of their basic rights by Israeli occupation including expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, systematic killings of innocent Palestinians, continued blockade of Gaza, and policy of administrative detentions.

He underscored that a sustained and meaningful engagement of the international community, remained essential to reviving the stalled peace process. Anindependent, viable and geographically contiguous Palestinian State, on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, was central to this process.

The Adviser reiterated Pakistan’s full support to the just cause of Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and return, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.

The meeting called upon the international community to take all necessary steps to compel Israel to strictly abide by its commitments under international law, and to fulfill its obligations for the establishment of a two-state solution, for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
