PR No. 218 FEDERAL MINISTER FOR LAW, JUSTICE AND CLIMATE CHANGE ZAHID HAMID WAS BRIEFED ABOUT STATUS OF MARINE ISSUES IN PAKISTAN TO PARTICIPATE IN “OUR OCEAN “CONFERENCE. Islamabad

A meeting was held at Ministry of Climate Change to brief Minister for Law, Justice and Climate Change Zahid Hamid about marine issues in Pakistan. Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Climate Change called the meeting to consult all relevant departments to participate in “Our Ocean” conference going to be held in September 2016 in USA. Pakistan. Earlier a meeting was called on 18th August in which all relevant departments were told present brief on status of marine in Pakistan to find out issues to be highlighted in the said conference.

‘These are cross cutting issues related to marine in Pakistan. The recent surveys show that population of fishing is declining due to netting, climate Change issues and other wrong practices. The production of Jellyfish is increasing”, said by Dr Asif Inam from Ministry of Science and Technology.

He also suggested decreasing fishing fleets and increasing aqua culture at local levels. There should be legislation for illegal fishing at federal level.

He also briefed about climate change impacts on oceans. The cyclones have narrowed down in last couple of years. He also suggested avoiding any installations and constructions at most vulnerable places. He also told the participant that in Chunher Corals are in healthy condition. This shows that biological conditions at this island are good. To maintain these healthy biological conditions on the Island, it should be included in Marine Protected Areas

Federal Minister was also informed about the Marine Pollution Board, which was notified in 2007, and two meetings were held. Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Climate Change Zahid Hamid ordered to activate Marine Pollution Board

“We have to actively participate in “Our Ocean” conference to highlight our maritime issues. This is an important event to show commitments to non –polluted oceans”, said by the Federal Minister for law, Justice and Climate Change.

The Our Ocean conferences focus on the key ocean issues of our time – marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts on the ocean.

Secretary of State John Kerry will host the 2016 Our Ocean Conference in Washington, D.C. on September 15 to 16.

The conferences are visually engaging, inspiring, and interactive events with an unwavering emphasis on commitments for action by participants and other stakeholders around the globe.? Through these conferences we strive to inspire the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists, and civil society to identify solutions and commit to actions to protect and conserve our ocean and its resources. Pakistan is first time invited in this conference to participate through a letter a invitation received from secretary of state of US John Kerry to Federal Minister for Law, Justice and climate Change Zahid Hamid.

Pervaiz Iqbal from Neval Head Quarter, Dr. Muhammad Asif Riaz from Navy, Dr. Alamdar Hussain Malik, Director Ports and Shipping and M. Junaid Wattu from Ministry of Food and Security also participated in the meeting.
