The ambassador of European
Union Jean Francois Caution paid a courtesy call to Federal Minister for
Climate Change Senator Mushahidullah Khan.
European Union can help in overcoming energy crises
through initiating more renewable energy projects. These renewable energy
products would also help to mitigate climate change in Pakistan. He
specifically mentioned producing renewable energy from the waste produced from
Buffalo Colony, hospital and industries in Karachi. It would save Arabian Sea
from pollution and help in growth of mangroves and marine life. He further said
that Pakistan is well aware of European Union leadership role in climate change
issues. He also told the ambassador that Pakistan contribution in global carbon
emission is less than 0.08% but climate change is affecting badly crops and
habitats. He also accepted the invitation from ambassador to participate in
Ocean Conference being held in Malta earlier October 2017.
His Excellency Ambassador
of European Union Jean Francois Caution informed the minister about ongoing
projects in Pakistan, Initiated by European Union. He told the Minister that we
are supporting in many small large hydropower projects. We are working on 165
power projects in Malakand division. The 100 projects have been complete and
remaining project will be completed next year. These projects will produce 28
MW of electricity. He also informed about 27 projects to produce renewable
energy from sugarcane wastes. We are also collaborating on small and medium
enterprises to make them energy efficient. He also highlighted He further added
that climate change is an important pillar of European union foreign policy. We
have been very active before and after Conference of Parties session 21 held in
France in 2015.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Ministry of Climate
Change Syed Abu Ahmed Akif, Inspector General Forests Syed Mehmood Nasir and
Mr. Imran Ashraf of European Union Embassy.
