PR No. 155 EXHIBITION ON “GANDHARA ART OF PAKISTAN” IN SRI LANKA Islamabad

An exhibition titled “Gandhara Art of Pakistan” is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from 21^st to 30^th June, 2016, as a part of the existing cultural exchange program for the years 2015-2020. The exhibition is a manifestation of the implementation of the decision taken during the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Sri Lanka from 4-6 January, 2016. The Prime Minister was pleased to offer to send the Holy relics to Sri Lanka on a regular basis for veneration of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

The exhibition shall reveal valuable cultural assets from the Gandhara region of Pakistan and include three (03) artifacts/relics (two relics of Lord Buddha, a Golden Casket and a Stone Casket). The artifacts belong to the TaxilaMuseum and will be on loan to Sri Lanka under a cooperation agreement recently signed between the two countries.

The goal of the exhibition is to further strengthen the existing deep cultural relations between the two friendly nations. The exhibition is taking place to mark the 2560^th Year of the Attainment of Enlightenment of Lord Buddha.

A three member delegation from Sri Lanka, including Chief Incumbent Nalandaramaya Thiniyawala Palitha Thero, and Mr. Gamini Jayawickrama Parera, the Minister for Sustainable Development & Wild Life, will arrive today to receive the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha. In this regard, a ceremony will be held at TaxilaMuseum on 19^th May, 2016. It is hoped that this exhibition will help bolster friendly ties between the two countries and will further strengthen cultural cooperation.
