PR No. 153 LIVER/KIDNEY TRANSPLANT SYSTEM TO BE OPERATIONALISED IN PIMS Islamabad

On the special instruction of the Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Senator Ch. Saud Majeed, member, Prime Minister’s Public Affairs Unit, has chaired a high level meeting regarding the progress of operationalization of transplantation of Liver/Kidney in PIMS here today.

Senator Ch. Saud Majeed has apprised the meeting that Prime Minister has been pleased to create a recoupable grant of Rs.100.00 Million for the treatment of poor patients who are not in a position to afford the expensive treatment charges of transplantation of this fatal diseases like; liver/kidney/cancer etc as these diseases are not covered under Bait ul Maal and National Health Programme. He conveyed the participants that there is a large number of poor and non-affording patients needing liver/kidney transplant, adding that the cost treatment of these fatal diseases is Rs.3.80 Million in India, Rs.2.90 Million in public sector hospital i.e. Sh. Zaid Hospital, Lahore and Rs.5.50 Million in private sector i.e.  Shifa International.

He further informed that treatment in India is not viable due to involvement of foreign exchange and burdensome procedure visa formalities. He further conveyed that the Sh.ZaidHospital has limited capacity and cannot in a position to cater for larger number of patients, and likely the cost of treatment in Shifa International is also very high making it difficult for the Government to sponsor optimal number of non-affording patients, he maintained. He advised the concerned authorities present in the meeting that the final implementation to make the system of transplantation operational in PIMSHospital would be presented in the coming meeting of all stakeholders which would be convened in near future, he pledged.

The meeting was also attended by the representatives of CAAD, M/O National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, PIMS, Sheikh Zayed Post Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore, ShifaInternationalHospital, Islamabad, and Abdul Qayoum Joint Secretary Prime Minister’s Grievances Wing.
