PR No. 142 PEMRA AUTHORITY DELIBERATES ON DTH LICENSING REGIME Islamabad

PEMRA’s 112thAuthority meeting held today at its Headquarters with Mr. AbsarAlamon the Chair.The Authority reviewed recommendations of the committee comprising PEMRA officers with regard to DTH Licensing in Pakistan. Furthermore, Authority was briefed about the outcome of public consultation process initiated by PEMRA vis-à-vis DTH Licensing on certain issues and had detailed discussions. While pondering upon DTH Licensing regime in Pakistan, the Authority expressed grave concern over the menace of illegal DTH being sold in the country and recommended, immediate crackdown against the same. It was decided that a comprehensive policy may be devised with Ministry of Interiors and Federal Board of Revenue to makeDTH Project a success.

The Authority also showed serious concern over various Re-enactment Programmes being aired on several news channels, showing scenes of murder, burglary and suicide etc. It also noticed the emerging trend of showing images of rape victims without any censor and disclosing identity of its relatives, violating privacy of an individual and family.  The Authority further directed PEMRA to take strict action against the channels for airing such tickers, news, footages and images, in accordance with laws.

Among the members, Secretary for Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Imran Gardezi, Chairman FBR Mr. Nisar Mohammad Khan, Chairman PTA Dr. Ismail Shah, Mrs. Shaheen Habibullah (Member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Mrs. Nargis Nasir (Member Punjab) were present in the meeting.

Next meeting of the Authority will be held on May 23, 2016 at PEMRA Headquarters, Islamabad.
