PR No.13 Pak Ambassador Masood Khalid Meets People’s Daily President Yang Zhenwu Islamabad: April 1, 2016

The Ambassador of Pakistan to China Masood Khalid met Mr. Yang Zhenwu the President of People’s Daily, the leading newspaper and media outlet of China, here today.

During the meeting both discussed media cooperation with particular reference to the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative and its flagship mega project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC) under progress between the two countries.

Ambassador Masood Khalid said that China-Pakistan Economic Corridor aimed at promoting connectivity, integration, and more people to people contacts, and cultural exchanges. He said the role of media was significant in that context and People’s Daily was making a positive contribution by taking several initiatives. He said holding media for a on One Belt One Road hosted by People’s Daily and participation by media from various belt and road countries to deliberate upon its various aspects and share best journalistic practices was a welcome initiative. He said that apart from energy projects, and new communication links, infrastructure that was built several decades ago between the two countries in the form of the legendary Karakoram Highway, was being bolstered under CPEC into stronger all-weather connectivity linkages, connecting Kashghar in China to Gwadar port, through several arteries, in Pakistan. He said that progress in communication links as well as media communication was important, and lauded the role of People’s Daily in that regard.

People’s Daily President Yang Zhenwu said that the Belt and Road initiative had attracted worldwide attention and was making concrete progress. He said that China and Pakistan have close friendship and have worked together, made progress and always stayed together. He said that media plays an important role in promoting understanding and friendship. He expressed satisfaction over growing media cooperation. He said that traditional media was facing challenge from new media, however People’s Daily had adopted an integrated approach so as to develop print and electronic media together; both print and online media having their own niche following. He said that media cooperation was an important component of this relationship which would be further strengthened.

The Ambassador also told People’s Daily President Yang that the current year was the 65th year of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and hoped that media interaction between the two countries will be further strengthened.
