PR No.254 UN Resident Rep Calls On Finance Minister, Conveys Message Of Condolence From UN Secy. General Islamabad: March 28, 2016

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Pakistan, Mr. Neil Buhne called on Finance Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar here on Monday.

Mr. Neil Buhne at the outset of the meeting conveyed message from the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, expressing grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the blast that occurred in Lahore on Sunday.

Minister Dar thanked Mr. Buhne for the kind sentiments expressed by UN Secretary General and said he would convey the message of condolences to the Prime Minister.

Mr. Buhne on this occasion shared with the Finance Minister United Nations’ deep resolve to support development activities in under served areas with a view to alleviating poverty. He said economic progress in these areas would help improve the standard of living of the people and also stem militancy and extremism. Specific development projects/programme for possible UN funding in next five years would be identified by Pakistan, it was agreed.

The UN Representative also highlighted UN support for rehabilitation of TDPs in FATA and said UN would continue to supplement Pakistan’s efforts in this regard.

Finance Minister on the occasion acknowledged support and assistance extended by various UN agencies for socio-economic development in Pakistan.
