PR No.152 Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Addresses IFAD’s Governing Council Islamabad

Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Mr. Sikander Hayat Khan Bosan, addressed the 39th Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome today. The session was opened by the President of Italy, Mr. Sergio Mattarella, says a press release received here today from Rome.

The Minister declared that 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda is a milestone towards a world free of hunger and malnutrition and also stressed that Pakistan was committed to the achievement of all these sustainable development goals (SDGs.)

Federal Minister Bosan highlighted the steps taken by the Government of Pakistan for rural uplift, agricultural development and poverty alleviation. He elaborated on the Agricultural Development Package, worth Rs. 341 billion announced by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in September last year. He stated that the Package primarily targets small landholder & underprivileged farmers. The Minister also enumerated Government’s various other initiatives such as the enactment of NAPHIS, Plant Breeders Rights and Seed Amendment bill.

The Minister stated that the Government’s agenda for youth development and women empowerment would transform the young men and women of Pakistan into a veritable asset. He spoke about schemes of “Youth Skill Development”, “Youth Business Loan” and the Benazir Income Support Programme.

IFAD’s contribution in Pakistan over the years was deeply appreciated by the Minister. He assured the organization of the support of the Government of Pakistan and called upon IFAD for enhancing its activity in Pakistan.
