Minister of Federal Education and Professional Training Egr Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman chaired the meeting on strengthening NEAS (National Education Assessment System) today.

Constitution of committee, using large scale assessment students’ learning, comparison of NEAS with other assessment models in developed and developing countries, NEAS short term and long term assessment plans, proposed grades and subject sustainability of NEAS were discussed in today’s meeting. It was also discussed in the meeting that assessments which effects education policy is sample based assessment at secondary rather than at primary level so we should be focusing more on that. Assessments help in system level policies e.g. provision of a framework for evaluation system, resource allocation policies and teaching and learning policies.

Minister of State said that curriculum based survey like TIMSS (The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) for grade 4th and grade 8th, with the collaboration of one international body is the most suitable thing for us to do in current scenario. He also directed to write to FPSC immediately to fill in the vacant posts in NEAS, and to create a post of grade 20 for the national coordinator in order to strengthen NEAS. Moreover strengthening of NEAS rules and addition of assistant subject specialists (as per the rules of NEAS) were also part of the agenda.

Some of the recommendations were given at the end of the meeting are; declaring NEAS as a research organization, reactivation of national steering committee, national assessment planning and coordination committee, national technical committee for NEAS.

Meeting was attended by the director NEAS, Federal Secretary Education, Additional Secretary Education, Joint Secretaries and Joint Education Advisor.
