Formal launch of Green Pakistan is being done by Prime Minister of Pakistan on 9thFebruary, 2017 on the occasion of kick-starting “Spring Tree Planting Campaign 2017”. As per vision of Prime Minister of Pakistan, 9th February 2017 is also being celebrated as “National Green Day” throughout Pakistan. Primary feature of National Green Day will be planting of hundreds of thousands of “indigenous and local” tree species in all provinces/AJK/GB by involving government departments, elected local leadership as well as students and civil society organizations. Chief Ministers of Balochsitan, GB, KP, Sindh and Prime Minister of AJK have already communicated their willingness to inaugurate Spring Tree Planting Campaign on 9th February to coincide with launch of Green Pakistan by Prime Minister of Pakistan at federal level.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, such huge number of indigenous trees is being planted throughout Pakistan. Similarly, it is also for the first time that highest level of political leadership and CSOs/NGOs are simultaneously celebrating National Green day on same day throughout Pakistan in all four provinces, GB, AJk and FATA.
Overall target for spring tree Planting campaign has been kept at 257 million trees, majority of which will be local and indigenous tree species. All these activities are being done under Prime Minister’s Green Pakistan Program.
Green Pakistan Program was conceived as per directions of Prime Minister of Pakistan for reviving forestry and wild life sectors in Pakistan alongside ameliorating adverse impacts of climate change. Umbrella PC-1 for Green Pakistan Program has already been cleared by ECNEC and programmatic activities are already underway across all provinces/federating units of Pakistan.
