Ms. Rabiya Javeri Agha, Secretary In-charge, Ministry of Human Rights, chaired an introductory meeting, held on Thursday here in the Ministry of Human Rights, with the representatives of prominent INGOs working in Pakistan. While, welcoming the participants, she appreciated the role and support provided by INGOs for promotion of human rights in the country. The participants were briefed about international commitments and human rights action plan prepared by the Ministry; and the efforts underway for implementation of plan of action. During the meeting, the participants introduced their ongoing projects/ programmes in the country, in the field of human rights. Most of the INGOs’ programmes were focused on women, children and vulnerable groups (senior citizens, persons with disabilities and transgender). The Secretary appreciated the efforts of INGOs for protection and promotion of human rights in the country and emphasized on improved coordination among the Ministry of Human Rights and INGOs. She mentioned that Ministry will be benefited from the resources and technical expertise available with the INGOs in discharging of Ministry’s mandate pertaining to human rights, in addition to their knowledge and experience for implementation of human rights action plan. She recommended formation of small groups on different areas like: education- incorporation of human rights component in the curriculum, health, disability, sensitization and awareness, senior citizens etc. to work in coordination and to support the efforts of each other in promotion of human rights agenda in Pakistan. INGOs’ representatives appreciated the initiative of the Ministry to provide a platform for sharing of ideas and discussion on areas of mutual interest. INGOs representatives working in the field of disability emphasized on data collection on persons with disabilities through up-coming census, following the five basic questions developed by UN for the purpose. Meeting ended with the vote of thanks by the Secretary and commitment extended by both the parties to have close coordination in future.
