Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Kamran Michael has said that Pakistan was committed to promote and protect human rights of all its citizens including the rights of women, minorities and children in line with the Constitutional guarantees and international commitments.

He expressed these views while talking to UK delegation led by Political Counselor Mr. William Middleton here in Islamabad on Wednesday. Besides, Human Rights Adviser, Mr. Tom Wowe, officials of Ministry of Human Rights and others were also present on this occasion.

During the meeting, Federal Minister for Human Rights apprised the British delegation regarding the steps taken by Government of Pakistan particularly by Ministry for Human Rights to promote and safeguard the fundamental rights including the rights of women, children and minorities. He also shared the recent amended laws for children rights and minorities and said that punishment regarding child labor and forceful marriages is also in to the consideration of Ministry of Human Rights.

Michael told the guests that National commission for Human Rights has also been established at the federal level adding that the commission has the powers to take suo-moto actions on the cases of violations of human rights. He informed the delegation that different committees have been formed at provincial levels to ensure the vigilant and timely delivery of rights to every member of this society. Helpline “1099” for legal advice to the victims of Human rights violations has also been launched for the speedy redressal of their grievances, he added. Kamran Michael further added that efforts are underway for implementation of Core Human rights Conventions at the gross root level with the collaboration of provincial governments at the federal and provincial level including GB and AJ&K. “National Commission on the status of women has been established to act as watch dog body for protection of women rights adding that National Commission for Child welfare and Development is working at the federal level for protection of children rights, he added. He said Parliament has made significant legislation for protection of human rights. He stated that National Commission for minorities (NCM) has been notified to support the Government’s initiatives for minorities’ rights.

He said the GSP+ status accorded by EU is not only focused on trade but also has social agenda such as creating employment opportunities for youth. He added that the Government of Pakistan has taken many steps to ensure the human rights particularly the rights of the women and the minorities. Federal Minister for Human Rights said that Government of Pakistan is aware of the demands and basic rights of all minorities and we are striving hard not only to ensure the rights of people but also to make any amendment as per the demands of time. Delegation highly appreciated the endeavors of government and Ministry for Human Rights and praised the steps taken in this regard. #
