PAKISTAN
’S NUCLEAR ARSENALS IN SAFE HANDS: WAJID

Islamabad: February 12, 2010

Pakistan is a responsible  country  and fully capable of  keeping its nuclear weapons safe and secure and there was no question of  their falling into the hands of  rogue  elements said Pakistan High Commissioner for UK Mr. Wajid Shamus Hasan while    responding to a query  on the occasion of   his  address to  Royal Over-Seas  League  for Commonwealth Countries in  Bournemouth , yesterday.  He further said   that the command and control system of Pakistan’s nuclear assets is impeccable and up to the mark. Further elaborating he added that   Pakistan developed its nuclear programme in response to India’s atomic explosions in 1974, and it has served as deterrent and helped in preventing war between the two countries, says a press release received from the Pakistan High Commission, London here today. .

High Commissioner was invited by the Bournemouth Chapter of the League to address its members in connection with its centennial celebrations. Addressing a well attended gathering on the topic ‘Current Situation in North of Pakistan’ Mr. Hasan said that the present problems in   settled areas of North Western Frontier   Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA)   could be traced back to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan three decades ago.

After giving an overview of political, geographical, economic and social background of these areas the High Commissioner discussed the root causes of current problems. He informed that the creation of Mujahidin by the Western countries with the objective to defeat Soviet Union and then abandoning of region by USA after withdrawal of Soviet forces led to creation of numerous problems in Pakistan.   The influx of three million refugees along with infiltration of militants of various nationalities as well as inflow of drugs and weapons pulled northern regions of Pakistan into a situation which unleashed a cycle of ongoing problems.  He said that  religious extremism was never a problem in these areas  but infiltration of  large number of  militants  from various countries who had  been fighting in Afghanistan  against Soviet Union , through the porous border  between  Afghanistan and Pakistan led  to rise of militancy and  extremism in this region.

The High Commissioner said that Pakistan has made  huge  sacrifices  both in terms of  human and material of resources  in  fight against terrorism resulting in immense pressure and  strain on our internal  security and   economy.

Underscoring the need for development in these areas the High Commissioner said that these problems can be tackled by adopting a multi faceted approach because banking only on military option was not an answer.  He said that present government’s 3D strategy revolves around Development, Dialogue and Deterrence. He said that development of these areas was a pre requisite to wean away people of these areas from extremism and in this connection assistance was required from other countries as well.

Expressing gratitude to the High Commissioner  the Acting  Chairman and Secretary of the  Bourne mouth  chapter of  ROSL  said that  Pakistan occupies a significant position among  commonwealth  countries and it was important to   project  Pakistan’s  point of view  regarding  current situation  in  Northern Region of Pakistan.  Royal overseas League is a non - profit organization formed in 1910 to facilitate commonwealth countries through welfare, social and cultural projects.
