PAKISTANI DELEGATION LEAVES FOR CHINA TO ATTEND WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE

A 14-member delegation led by Faridullah Khan, Managing Director, Energy Conservation (ENERCON), Ministry of Environment has left for China to attend a training workshop on climate change.

The workshop is hosted by National Development and Reforms Commission (NDRC) of China, will ponder over China’s rules and regulations and current development and methodology on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

Pakistani delegation will also visit various CDM Projects in China which will enhance the capacity for development of CDM Projects in Pakistan to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and to earn Carbon Emission Reduction Credits (CERs), improve skills in climate change dialogues at regional and international level and will increase cooperation between the two countries in addressing the issue of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The delegation includes representatives of federal and provincial governments, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, project developers and consultants from the private sector on CDM.

The workshop which would be concluded 5th December be highly beneficial for both the countries in formulating the future policies and strategies on CDM and climate Change.

The workshop has been arranged after a sideline meeting held between HameedullahJan Afridi, Federal Minister for Environment and his Chinese counterpart regarding Sino-Pak cooperation on Clean Development Mechanism in Poznan, Poland.

Cairns Group has contributed significantly in negotiations on agriculture, and we believe that meaningful engagement by various quarters such as Cairns Group could lead us to a successful conclusion of Doha round. This was stated by federal Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim, while addressing the Cairns Group ministerial Meeting in Geneva. In his statement the Commerce Minister commented positively on the future of multi lateral trading system. The federal Minister commended the hard work of the Cairns members in the three disciplines of Agriculture negotiations i.e. Domestic support, Export Competition and Market access.

The Cairns Group is a coalition of 19 Agriculture exporting countries with a commitment to reforming agriculture trade to make it free and fair. The Cairns group is desirous of more market access in agriculture products and has been involved in agriculture reforms debate since its formation in 1986. It plays a key role in pressing the WTO membership to meet the far reaching mandate set in Doha.

Chief Minister NWFP Ameer Haider Khan Hoti called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday afternoon.

Matters relating to drive against militants and rehabilitation of displaced persons were discussed along with law and order situation and development projects in the province.

The President said that heinous incidents such as bomb blast across the country by the militants would never shake our resolve to pursue the fight to its logical end. The operation against militancy would continue till the complete elimination of this menace, the President said. The President also paid high tribute to the people of NWFP for the huge sacrifices made in the drive against terrorism.

The Chief Minister briefed the President about the various steps being taken by the provincial government to maintain law and order in the province.

ANP Senators Haji Mohammad Adeel and Afrasiab Khan Khattak were also present during the meeting.

Ministry’s initiative for the Visually Impaired Persons

Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education through the State Bank of Pakistan has issued directions to the banks to open individual accounts for the visually impaired persons instead of a joint account so as to facilitate the visually impaired persons and make them a productive member of society.

The banks are also advised to explain to them terms and conditions set by the banks to govern the operation of these accounts.

Mukhtar, Jatoi AND ARBAB ZAHIR Condemn RAWALPINDI Suicide Attack

Federal Minister for Defence, Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar, Federal Minister for Defence Production, Mr. Abdul Qayyum Khan Jatoi, and Minister of State for Defence, Arbab Muhammad Zahir Khan have strongly condemned the suicide attack at a mosque near Parade Lane, Rawalpindi and have expressed profound grief over the loss of previous human lives. Denouncing the attack, the Ministers said that terrorists are so inhuman that they didn’t spare even the worshippers in a sacred place like mosque. They said that our religion Islam is strongly against to shed the blood of innocent people. The Ministers said that terrorists were the enemies of this country and wanted to spread terror and destabilize it but every effort would be made to eliminate them. The Ministers resolved that the perpetrators of this cowardly act would soon be taken to task. They sympathized with the bereaved families and prayed to Almighty Allah to shower His blessings on the departed souls and grant courage and fortitude to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss with patience and equanimity.

SUGAR CONSUMPTION HAS TO BE REDUCED DRASTICALLY. NAZAR MUHAMMAD GONDAL

The Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Nazar Muhammad Gondal has initiated a country-wide drive to minimize the consumption of sugar by announcing a total ban on the use of sugar in his office and all the concerned offices of the ministry. The Federal Minister chaired a meeting at his office to look into the matter of the huge use of sugar across the country. The minister said that we need to formulate ways and means to reduce the huge consumption of sugar in our households and other edibles. The Minister stressed that the present government is determined to bring down the per capita sugar consumption to the level of the neighboring country Bangladesh. The per year per capita consumption of the commodity in Pakistan is about 24 kg which is even more than the double of only 11 kg in Bangladesh.

The Minister emphasized that the excessive use of sugar is not even good for human health. “We must reduce the consumption of sugar as its excessive use is not good for human health. Our very much realistic target is to bring down its use to the level of Bangladesh. We will follow a well planned strategy in this regard and taking the first step in this direction, I announce a total ban on the use of sugar in all the offices of the ministry’. said the Minister.

The Federal Minister said that the motive behind the drive is to make the people conscious of the huge consumption of sugar unknowingly. “People must know that the level of sugar we consume is dangerously high”, expressed the honorable minister.  

The Minister further said that the people from the medical profession and civil society should play their role in educating the masses against the excessive use of sugar. “Although the commodity is easily available after the crushing of sugarcane but it does not mean that we use it in such quantity that is dangerous for our health”, said the Minister.

MQM Quaid Mr. Altaf Hussain telephoned Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and expressed his sorrow and deep grief over the loss of innocent lives in the tragic incident of suicide bomb attack at a Mosque in Rawalpindi.

He praised the velour of the law enforcement agencies for rendering great sacrifices in protecting the lives of the people. He asked the Prime Minister to appeal the Ulema to condemn terrorism in strongest term and to create awareness amongst the people that suicide bombing is un-Islamic and is a inhuman act. He offered full support to the government and said that his party is wholeheartedly behind the government efforts in stamping out terrorism and militancy from the country.

Thanking Mr. Altaf Hussain for his support, the Prime Minister said that these cowardly acts of terrorism would not weaken our resolve to eliminate terrorism from the country and added that the operation against them would continue to its logical conclusion. He said that terrorists have no religion and no boundary and today’s act of terrorism in a mosque killing innocent people clearly reflects their evil designs.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani spoke to the Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiyani, here this evening, and expressed his grief and sorrow over the tragic suicide attack at a Rawalpindi mosque today in which several innocent people lost their lives including the personnel of the armed forces. He also extended his condolences on the loss of precious lives.

The Prime Minister appreciated the valor and courage of the armed forces in meeting the challenge of terrorism and lauded the sacrifices given by them in providing security to the life and property of the people.

The Prime Minister reiterated that such cowardly acts would not weaken the government’s resolve of eliminating the scourge of terrorism from the country.

The visit will be rescheduled on a suitable date. The postponement is on account of unfortunate incident in Rawalpindi , wherein many precious innocent lives were lost in terrorist attack.
