Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that media as an important  institution of the state has to play its due role in educating and guiding the people on national issues.  The common man, he added, has to be kept informed about the prospects of his prosperity and better future. 

He was talking to Mir Shakil ur Rehman, CEO of Jang / Geo Group who called on him here at the Prime Minister’s House today.

While appreciating the role of media, the Prime Minister said that it could undoubtedly give hope and confidence to the people about a better future. The government at its end, is doing its best to take all political forces in an effort to develop consensus on the issues of national significance.             The process of political reconciliation is an attempt in the same direction so that the people can benefit from the democratic system, he added. The provincial harmony thus established resulted in the finalization of NFC Award which would have far reaching effect in bringing the people together besides ensuring progress and development.  

 The Prime Minister said that despite challenges, the development activities throughout the country are continuing. Aghazaz-e-Haqooq-Balochistan, internal autonomy for    Gilgit-Baltistan, infra-structure development in Punjab and Sindh and economic package for NWFP and FATA have been possible because of democracy.  He said it is only through democracy that all institutions of the state could function independently within the ambit of the constitution thus ensuring good governance, leading toward a moderate and progressive Pakistan.            

Mir Shakil ur Rehman, while appreciating Prime Minister’s effort to promote democratic culture in the country said that more interaction between the media and government Ministers/officials could help in developing better understanding of issues and help translate the same for the benefit of the common man.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said the government has a defined plan for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of FATA, specifically for South Waziristan as soon as peace is established in the region.

The plan, he said, envisages infrastructure and social structure development which would benefit the common man to a large extent.

The Prime Minister was talking to Mr. Abdul Malik Wazir, MNA from South Waziristan, who called on him here at the PM’s House here today.

Mr. Abdul Malik Wazir informed the Prime Minister of matters relating to his constituency.

Federal Government has announced for General Public Information that the 5th February 2010 (Friday) will be closed holiday on the eve of Kashmir Solidarity Day.

The National Kashmir Committee has decided that one-minute silence through out the country may be observed on 5th February 2010 at 1000 hours sharp.

Provinces/ICT Administration are requested to observe one-minute silence on 5th February 2010 at 1000 hours accordingly General Public are also requested to observe one-minute silence to honour Kashmir Shuhada.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has directed the Ministry of Education to make Islamabad a city of quality education and a role model for rest of the country. Keeping in view the requirements of knowledge-based economy, he added, the government is according top priority to education sector. He further directed them to formulate an integrated programme in line with the new education policy to revamp the system and impart quality education in consonance with the future needs of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister gave these direction while chairing a meeting of the Ministry of Education at the PM House today.

The Prime Minister further directed the Ministry to upgrade one boys and one girls’ school during the current financial year at Barakahu as Model Colleges by enhancing education facilities in the rural areas of Islamabad. He also directed the Ministry to work out a plan to upgrade two existing boys and girls’ schools into model colleges at Sihala and Tarnol as well in the next financial year for providing quality education to the children in rural areas. 

As regards the adhoc teachers, the Prime Minister asked the Ministry to liaise with the Ministries of Finance and Establishment to resolve the issue.

The Prime Minister stressed upon the need to improve the quality of education in the government schools through proper monitoring and right selection/training of teachers. He mentioned that during his surprise visit to one of the secondary girls’ school in Islamabad on 30th January, he observed that the level of knowledge of students was unsatisfactory while some of the teachers were absent. He expressed dismay that even the Ministry does not have a proper monitoring system even for the schools in Islamabad.

The Minister of State for Education Mr. Ghulam Farid Kathia assured the Prime Minister that in consonance with his directions a comprehensive plan shall be submitted within one month to improve the standard of education. The issue relating to the shortage of science, mathematics and computer teachers was also discussed in the meeting.  

The meeting was also attended by senior officials of the Ministry.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that government believes in strengthening bilateral relations with all the South Asian regional countries, particularly with Bangladesh, which should be based on mutual respects, trust, common faith, history and culture. He observed that both the countries share similarity of views on regional and international issues demonstrated through coordinating their positions on the international and regional fora. He expressed the hope that this coordination and understanding between the two countries will be further promoted in the future.

The Prime Minister was talking to Mr. Ashraf Qureshi, Pakistan’s High Commissioner designate to Bangladesh who paid the farewell call on him, before leaving for Dhaka today here at the Prime Minster’s House this afternoon.

The Prime Minister directed the High Commissioner to focus his endeavours on bringing the two countries ever closer especially in the economic, trade and socio-cultural fields. He underlined the importance of promoting high level interaction and exchanges between the two sides with emphasis upon the need for building on the existing goodwill in both the countries for each other to achieve this objective. While recalling that he had accepted his Bangladeshi counterpart’s invitation for an official visit to Dhaka, Prime Minister asked the High Commissioner designate to work for early materialization of the invitation in consultation with the Bangladeshi authorities. He also directed the High Commissioner designate to convey his best wishes to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh (with whom he had a very cordial and useful meeting in Sharm-ul-Shaikh, last year) along with his message that his government remained committed to take the bilateral ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh to a higher level.

The High Commissioner designate thanked the Prime Minister for reposing his confidence in him and assured him that he would undertake every possible effort in accordance with the guidance and direction of the Prime Minister to foster strong ties with Bangladesh.

NEWS ITEM CLARIFIED
Islamabad: February 1, 2010

Federal Minister for Health, Makhdoom Shahabuddin has clarified a news item, which appeared in a section of the press regarding the statement of Federal Interior Minister, Mr. Rehman Malik that 50% of the available medicines in the market are spurious.

Clarifying the news items, the Minister said that the news items is not based on facts and the statement of Federal Interior Minister has been misquoted by the press.

The Minister said that pharmaceutical sector in the country is regulated by Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan which has conducted a number of surveys on the subject and has not reported any thing like that.

MINISTER FOR CONTINUOUS POWER SUPPLY TO EXPORT ORIENTED INDUSTRY
Islamabad: February 1, 2010

Federal Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that continuous and interrupted power supply to the export oriented industry is the top priority of the government and all the steps are being taken to eliminate loadshedding for industrial sector.

He said this while talking to a delegation of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Gujrat Chambers of Commerce and Industry who called on him here today in his office.

The Minister said that most of the export oriented industry dominated feeders has been segregated from other areas and assured rest of them will soon be segregated in order to ensure less load management. He said that currently there is nominal load shedding for industrial sector.  He also directed Pepco that there should be no unscheduled load shedding for this foreign exchange earner industry. He also told the delegation that 1000 MW power projects are being set up in the Sialkot, Gujrat and Gujranwala region and 50 percent of them will be completed this year. He said that government is taking all possible steps to over come the power crisis and the electricity related problems of the industrialists will be resolved. He also informed them that the impact of rental project of 1200 MW on power tariff will be only six percent and 2000MW will be only 9 percent as per report of the ADB. He said that reports of increase of 45 % in power tariff due to rental power projects are contrary to the facts. He said that some political leaders are misleading the nation in this regard. The Minister also stressed the need for energy conservation and sought chambers cooperation in this respect.

The delegation appreciated the government for the steps being taken to overcome the energy crisis. They are of the views that there is no immediate solution of energy crisis except rental power projects. The delegation also discussed their electricity related issued with the Minister and demanded exemption from load shedding. They also assured that to cooperate in the energy conservation campaign and to motivate the people in this respect. ENDS

2ND MEETING.   Federal Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf has said that the proposals of public representatives will be immediately implemented for improvement of distribution system in the NWFP.

He said this while talking to a Parliamentary delegation of Awami Nationl Party who called on him here today led by Syed Haider Shah MNA.

The Minister directed Pesco that the overloaded transformers in the Pesco region should be replaced before start of summer season and work on the electricity proposals of the MNAs should be started without any delay.

The delegation briefed the Minister on their proposals and demanded their early completion. ENDS
