PR No. 24 COUNTRY DIRECTOR "UNDP" CALLS ON ADVISOR TO PM ON CLIMATE CHANGE MALIK AMIN ASLAM Islamabad: September 4, 2018

A delegation led by Mr. Ignacio Artaza Called on Advisor to PM on climate change Malik Amin Aslam here at Ministry of climate change (today). Federal Secretary MOCC, Khizar Hayat Khan was also present in the meeting. Mr. Ignacio Artaza while felicitating the Minister on his charge assumption of the Ministry of environment and climate change stated that one third of the UNDP projects are environment centric and we are keen to collaborate with MOCC and will provide all possible support. Malik Amin Aslam Khan Shared with delegates that Pakistan is facing many environmental challenges like many other countries and we are committed to take all necessary measures to minimize climate change hazards. We intend to transform our mega national parks into world class International tourist resorts which will surely change the entire perception of the country. Advisor to PM on climate change said that his leadership attaches highest priority to the environmental protection. Therefore we had a successful project of one billion tree plantation at KPK and now we have decided to upscale this project to ten billion tsunami tree plantation throughout the country. On 2nd September 2018, we observed tree plantation day which received extra ordinary response from the people of Pakistan especially youth enthusiastically participated in the drive. Our hash tag #Plant4Pakistan remained top trend consecutively for last three days with more than one lac tweets. Initially we set the target to plant 1.5 million trees in a day but ended up with more than 2.5 million which is phenomenal, he added. Malik Amin Aslam asked the UNDP to Join Hands with Ministry of climate change to finance third party audit of our ten billion tsunami tree plantation project and in the implementation of the recommendations of "Smog Commission" and other areas of mutual concern. UNDP Country Director shared with the Minister some key initiatives which are being financed by his organization with collaboration of the federal and Provincial governments including US$37 million glacial lak outburst flood (GLOF) project which is being led by Ministry of Climate Change, with support from UNDP and US$37 million in grant funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), , to target the most vulnerable rural communities in the high-altitude regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
