PR No.101 SECRETARY NARCOTICS CONTROL REPRESENTED PAKISTAN IN VIENNA, ON ANNUAL COMMISSION ON NARCOTICS DRUGS Islamabad: March 15, 2018

Pakistani society has no place for drugs, and government has left no stone unturned to stop supply of narcotics across the country, said the Secretary Narcotics Control Iqbal Mehmood while representing Pakistan on annual International Commission on Narcotics Drugs (CND), in Vienna. Pakistan is extremely responsible country, and despite of limited capacity and lack of skilled human resources, the country has made remarkable strides against drugs in Pakistan. DG Anti Narcotics Force (ANF), Maj. Gen Mussarat Nawaz Malik has also accompanied Secretary Narcotics. The secretary has highlighted the recent bumper poppy crop in the neighbor country, and subsequently its related implications for Pakistan. As per latest survey from UNODC, it is pertinent to mention here that in 2017 alone, Afghanistan has gigantic increased of 87% in poppy production. While mentioning the efforts so far made, the secretary explained that last year, Pakistan has seized 400 Tons of Drugs in various search and found operations across country. Out of those, most of them were had involvement of foreign countries. Apart from UNODC International officials, the Pakistani delegation has also had meetings with Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Saudia Arabian and American reps. The representatives from foreign countries not only appreciated the efforts being done by Pakistani government, but also ensure full support and cooperation to Pakistan in eliminating the menace of drugs. Secretary has also addressed another forum organized by Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and extends some key inputs for the elimination of drugs. Government of Pakistan has organized two sub-sessions on the forum of Corruption Narcotics Drugs, where Pakistan’s case and approach towards drug elimination has been showcased. International participants lauded the untiring efforts of Pakistan in eradication of drugs from the region and in Pakistan in particular. They further, ensured all possible support to enhance the capacity and technical assistance in combating this global menace. *****
