PR No. 138 Health Minister Reviews Preparation for May round of Polio Campaign Directs sustained efforts to maintain momentum Islamabad

Minister for National Health Services Saira Afzal Tarar today chaired a high level meeting to review preparations for the upcoming National round of the Polio Campaign being held across the country from 15th May. The meeting was attended by Director General Health, Polio team leads representing the partner agencies WHO, UNICEF, BMGF, NSTOP, senior Advisers of the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio, National Manager EPI and technical representative of Pakistan Army.

 

The Minister congratulated entire Polio team over the recent acknowledgement of great work in the country by the London based Independent Monitoring Board. Remarkable progress has been achieved with the country reporting 20 cases in 2016 as compared to 306 cases in the previous year and 2 cases so far this year added the Minister Appreciating the entire polio team, the Minister urged to make sustained efforts to plug the remaining immunity gaps as soon as possible so that transmission of polio virus is stopped. The Minister directed that optimal level of preparations be made for the upcoming national round of the Polio campaign targeting over 37 million children. She also called for stringent monitoring by National and Provincial Emergency Operation Centres to ensure there is no let up in efforts at any level.

 

Minister expressed concern over third consecutive positive environmental sample from Islamabad indicating presence of polio virus and urged the need for coordinated efforts between Rawalpindi and Islamabad teams to avert the risk of Polio cases in the districts. Minister further advised EPI to make the best use of available data on Routine Immunization being collected through Polio Program and fast track efforts to improve immunization coverage particularly in core reservoirs having Community Based Vaccinators.

 

Earlier, a detailed technical briefing on current epidemiology of Polio, results  of April national Polio Campaign and preparedness status for the May national round was given by National Coordinator National Emergency Operation Centre for Polio Eradication Dr. Rana Muhammad Safdar.
