PR No.313 Foreign Secretary Meets Director General Of The IAEA Islamabad

Foreign Secretary Mr Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry met Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr Yukiya Amano, today in Vienna. This was second meeting of Foreign Secretary with Director General Amano in 2015 says a press release received from Austria here today.

The Foreign Secretary appreciated the IAEA’s unique role in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear technology through its Technical Cooperation Programme. He highlighted that Pakistan valued the productive and mutually beneficial relationship with the IAEA since its establishment in 1957. He added that Pakistan had the experience, trained manpower, and facilities to share nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. The Foreign Secretary reiterated that Pakistan accorded the highest importance to nuclear safety and security as its national responsibility and was fully meeting its obligations in this regard.

Director General Amano expressed satisfaction with the implementation of IAEA Safeguards in Pakistan in consistent with our undertakings. He further appreciated the nuclear safety and security record of Pakistan. While highlighting the relevance of Agency’s work in the context of Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted in New York, Director General Amano stated that the Agency stood ready to respond to the needs of Member States through its Technical Cooperation Programme.

The IAEA works to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. Pakistan actively participates in the IAEA matters and has been regularly elected on the IAEA Board of Governors.
