President Mamnoon Hussain said that imports of high tech defense equipment have increased due to aggressive military doctrine in the region which may disturb the existing balance of power. The President stated that in this context improvement of the economy and strengthening of Pakistan’s defence capabilities are need of the hour through which we can not only address internal and external challenges but can also strengthen the national economy.

The President said this while inaugurating the two day Seminar on Public-Private Partnership in the Defence Production and Export organized by Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) here in Islamabad on Wednesday. Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, Director General Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) Maj. Gen. Agha Masood Akram and Executive Director Centre for International Strategic Studies (CISS) Ali Sarwar Naqvi also addressed the Seminar.

The President stated that defense products of Pakistan are of international quality but due to lack of marketing and other problems the volume of exports is not at par with its actual potential adding that public sector should adopt new ideas and entrepreneurship and benefit from experiences of the private sector. The President stated that private sector investment in different sectors of defence production should be encouraged and in this regard benefit should be taken from Turkey’s experiences. The President hoped that the Seminar would submit concrete recommendations for enhancing defense exports by examining the possibilities of public-private partnership.

Federal Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain said that Pakistan has achieved significant progress in defence production adding that the purpose of this Seminar is to formulate solid recommendations by exploring avenues for public-private partnership and devise effective policies in this regard.
