H.E. Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan High Commissioner to the UK called on Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, Commonwealth Secretary General at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London on 14 November 2016.
The two sides discussed matters pertaining to cooperation between Pakistan and the Commonwealth, and the post-Brexit opportunities for the Commonwealth countries.
The High Commissioner, recalling that Pakistan is one of the founding
members of the Commonwealth, assured the Secretary General of
Pakistan’s support in steering forward the Organization in a focused and
mutually beneficial manner. The Secretary General appreciated
Pakistan’s efforts towards upholding and promoting core values of the
organization.
The post-Brexit opportunities for the Commonwealth countries came under
discussion. The Secretary General outlined her vision to enhance
intra-Commonwealth trade in the post-Brexit scenario. Upon this, the
High Commissioner highlighted Pakistan’s potential role in enhancing
mutually beneficial intra-Commonwealth trade and economic activities in
the wake of Brexit. The two sides also reviewed in detail the ongoing
cooperation between Pakistan and the Commonwealth in diverse fields such
as science, education, trade and agriculture.
The High Commissioner also apprised the Secretary General about the Government of Pakistan’s decision to put forward its candidate, Dr Sania Nishter, for the post of Director General, World Health Organization (WHO).
The High Commissioner reiterated invitation for the Secretary General to visit Pakistan, which the latter accepted with thanks and assured her staff would work on the visit schedule for the next year.
