The Pakistan Minister for Climate change Mr Zahid Hamid Khan  represented Pakistan at the opening ceremony of the Conference of Parties (COP 22) which was opened by the king of Morocco His Excellency King Muhammad the 6th in the ancient Moroccan city of Marrakesh.  He is accompanied by Secretary Climate Change  Syed Abu Ahmad Akif and several senior officials. The  COP is an annual event of the UNFCCC “United Nations Framework convention on climate change” but the event has achieved great prominence after the Paris Agreement in 2015.  This agreement  aims at reduced global green house gas emissions to keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees centigrade.

 

Mr Ban ki Moon, the outgoing UN Secretary General also spoke on the occasion. He is the only Secretary General who attended all 10 COPs in his tenure.

 

Tens of heads of state including the French President of France François Holland are attending the COP.  The Prime Minister of Pakistan was also scheduled to attend but had to forego due to the upcoming visit of the Turkish President.
