PR No.234 US APPRECIATES PAKISTAN’S EFFORTS TO COUNTER NARCOTICS Islamabad

H.E. Ambassador William Brownfield, US Assistant Secretary of State for Bureau of International Narcotics & Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), accompanied by senior officers visited Narcotics Control Division (NCD) on 20th October, 2016 for a meeting with Mr. Ajaz Ali Khan, Secretary NCD. Maj. Gen. Nasir Dilawar Shah, DG ANF and Mr. Toaha Hussain Bugti, Senior Joint Secretary NCD besides other officers also attended the meeting.

Both sides discussed the matters of mutual interest and expressed satisfaction on the longstanding cooperation between the two countries in the field of Counter Narcotics. The Secretary NCD gave a detailed briefing on the current drug scenario and the Pakistani efforts to fight this menace. He highlighted that due to the relentless efforts of Government of Pakistan, the country has consistently maintained its status of “Poppy Free State”. He also highlighted the Government’s efforts for establishment of treatment and rehabilitation facilities for drug dependent patients. He emphasized that the international community must come forward to help Pakistan in the fight against drugs as it is a common and shared responsibility.

The visiting delegation acknowledged and appreciated the achievements of the NCD and the ANF in seizing huge quantities of narcotics and drugs worth up to 8 billion US $ in 2015 and around 6.6 Billion US $ in 2016 and controlled its outward flow to the other countries. He also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in the field of Drug Demand Reduction and assured full cooperation of the US Government in Pakistan’s fight against drugs.

Both sides expressed satisfaction on the state of ongoing cooperation between the two countries. They agreed to expand the activities with regard to drug supply reduction and the drug demand reduction.
