MESSAGE FROM MR. MAMNOON HUSSAIN

PRESIDENT ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN

(On International White Cane Safety Day-15th Oct, 2016)

Islamabad: October 14, 2016

The International White Cane Safety day being observed worldwide on October 15 every year is an occasion to create awareness about the problems and requirements of the visually handicapped persons and to take practical steps to address those problems.

The present government is committed to address the issues of special people including those afflicted with impaired vision and blindness. It has set up a number of projects for the prevention and cure of blindness as well as for the education, vocational training and rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired people so as to make them useful and productive members of society. Special job quotas and economic opportunities have been created for the handicapped people including those with impaired sight.

I appreciate the efforts being made by various organizations for their excellent humanitarian and charitable services in the fields of eye donation, corneal transplants, dialysis and eye care thereby lessening the woes of visually handicapped and people suffering from different eye ailments. I also commend all those individuals and associations who are engaged in the task of rehabilitation of disabled.

I urge all segments of society, the philanthropists, relevant government departments to come forward and join hands and share their resources and wisdom to address the problems of visually handicapped people. I would also like to reassure our brothers and sisters with visual disabilities that the government would continue taking all possible measures to protect their rights to enable them to lead a successful life.
