Mr. Malik Abdul Ghafoor, President Sialkot Chamber of Commerce called on Iftikhar Ali Shallwani, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Works here today in his office. Officials from Ministry of Climate Change, Commerce and Industries and Defence also attended the meeting. The meeting was convened on the direction of Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Federal Defence Minister. During the course of meeting, relocation of tanneries in the Sialkot Tannery Zone came under discussion. The meeting aimed to address the environmental concerns posed by the existing locations of tanneries in densely populated areas. Mr. Malik Abdul Ghafoor requested the Secretary housing to help in civil and solarisation work through PSDP to which Iftikhar Ali Shallwani assured his full cooperation and support and said that housing ministry will support and assist this project in building roads, civil work and infrastructure. Iftikhar Ali Shallwani encouraged the industry representatives to support the government’s efforts to relocate the tanneries to industrial parks that are equipped with proper waste management facilities and comply with environmental regulations. He further said that the relocation will overcome environmental, social and economic concerns related to the tanning industry. This project would increase the worldwide demand for Pakistani leather products and Pakistan’s leather garments.
