Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), here today, according to which approximately 16,000 people affected by the October 2015 earthquake in Chitral District will receive a one-time cash grant of Rupees 3,600 to help them cope with the aftereffects of the damage suffered and the extreme weather. The Managing Director PBM, Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh and the UNICEF Deputy Representative in Pakistan, Cristian Munduate signed the (MoU) at the PBM Headquarters in Islamabad. Speaking on this occasion, Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh said that this project would further strengthen the existing relationship between PBM and UNICEF. He said that the two organisations have been collaborating since 2011 and the successful execution of the conditional cash transfer for PBM’s Child Support Programme is a testimony of their mutual effort to benefit the poorest of the poor segments of the society. Highlighting the humanitarian efforts of the present government for the people affected by the 2015 earthquake, Mr. Sheikh said that the Government provided a comprehensive package to support families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who experienced death, injury or damage to housing. Mr. Sheikh further said that support from the UNICEF is timely and valuable for PBM which continues to strive for the uplift of the underprivileged in the country, especially vulnerable children and women.Appreciating government’s resolve to assist most in need, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Pakistan, Cristian Munduate said that cash transfers are used worldwide as principal social development intervention by governments and donors both in emergency and non-emergency situations. Such cash transfers particularly favour local communities and livelihood. This cash grant is expected to help the beneficiaries in supporting their young children and catering to their immediate needs, she added. She lauded the leadership of Mr. Sheikh and the technical capacity of PBM to deliver such assistance in a short time. The UNICEF Deputy Representative thanked PBM for its partnership and hoped that this important intervention will be successfully executed in the most effective and transparent manner for the realization and fulfilment of the rights of the child.
