PR No. 105
Islamabad: November 15, 2019

Pakistan has gotten another recognition globally for its role on battling Climate Change as, the 24 member Board of the Green Climate Fund elected our Board Member, Mr. Nauman Bashir Bhatti as Chair (from developing country side) for 2020. He was elected by consensus. France will Co-Chair the fund from developed countries. Advisor to Prime Minister on Climate Change, Mr. Malik Amin Aslam said, “it is a big honor, responsibility and opportunity for Pakistan to be elected as the chair for Global Climate Fund.” Furthermore he said that this leading role will give Pakistan an opportunity to access climate funds which will help in implementing Prime Minister Imran Khan’s 5 point environment agenda. As part of Pakistan’s role to fight climate change, it is planning 10 billion trees across Pakistan under an initiative known as “10 Billion Tree Tsunami.” It is a significant achievement and demonstrates the trust and confidence which Pakistan receives within the Fund. The GCF is the largest international climate change fund, which has committed over US$ 7 billion since 2015, and has secured additional funding for over US$ 9.8 billion until 2023, for funding climate change projects in developing countries. The fund is estimated to go up to $100 billion in next two years as committed under the Paris agreement on climate change. During the past 3 years, Pakistan has been able to secure 3 projects from the fund with total worth at US $ 121 million. Chairmanship of the Board will enable us significantly raise Pakistan’s profile internationally.
