PR No.01 CANADIAN DELEGATION DISCUSSED OPPORTUNITIES FOR CANADIAN PRIVATE COMPANIES IN ENERGY AND RESEARCH ON CLIMATE CHANGE SECTORS IN PAKISTAN WITH FEDERAL MINISTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ZAHID HAMID Islamabad

Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid held a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner Mr. Perry Calderwood and Ms. Julia Bentley Acting Director General for South Asian Foreign a “Pakistan is at 135th on the list of countries emitting carbon emissions and moving up on the list of countries most affected by Climate Change. Pakistan is facing many climate change effects in the form of glacier melting, flooding, desertification, sea intrusion”, said by the Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid.

He also informed that Pakistan is taking many great initiatives on policy level to mitigate and adapt to climate change effects. Pakistan formulated National Climate Change policy in 2012 which was followed by the Climate Change Framework in 2013.He also highlighted that recently national Assembly approved Climate Change Act. Under this Act Climate Change Council will be established headed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He further added this Council will approve projects related to climate change keeping in view international standards. Environment t is a provincial subject so all these initiatives have been taken by the consultation of provinces. He also highlighted Prime Minister’s Green Pakistan program to preserve forestry and wildlife sector in Pakistan.

The delegation informed the Minister that many private Canadian companies are interested to invest in solar energy sector of Pakistan. Federal Minister highlighted that many Chinese and Turkish companies are already working on energy sector in Pakistan. Pakistan has set up world biggest solar energy park of 1000 MW in Pakistan. Both sides agreed to collaborate on energy and research sector of Pakistan.
